There is no fundamental reason why there should be a relationship between the vertical succession of beds in a submarine fan deposit and their three-dimensional geometry. Parts of some fans behave in such a way that they leave behind sequences that can be used to define bed geometry. However, a significant proportion of the fan sands that are found in hydrocarbon reservoirs were deposited in unstable mid-fan environments that produce chaotic vertical successions. These are best modelled using stochastic techniques.
