The observed distribution of metamorphic transformations, using: (1) the metamorphic facies of Taveyanne Sandstones, (2) the mineralogical composition of the argillaceous fraction (which shows index minerals like paragonite, corrensite and allevardite), (3) the crystallinity indices of the illites, enables us to show that a reverse gradient (the maximum of which must be located in the thrust plane) is superimposed on the already known gradient which decreases both towards the top of the series and towards the external part of the chain.
To account for the observed relationships, we propose that heat was produced by friction along the thrust plane; the theoretical implications of such a model are discussed.
It is pointed out that such a reversed metamorphic gradient will only be observed following favourable circumstances of nappe thickness, rate of motion, thermal properties of the rocks and rate of erosion.
