I. Mechanics of Thrusts and Nappes

The role of gravity in orogenic belts

H. Ramberg

Geologiska Institutionen, Uppsala Universitet, Sweden

The diapiric and nappe structures of the Caledonides in Scandanavia are briefly discussed and compared with similar structures in other orogenic belts. The buoyancy of sialic basement is discussed and a theoretical treatment of basement buoyancy is outlined. The gravitational spreading of nappes is then considered. Two theoretical models are presented: the first considers the condition of free slip on the base and the second deals with the more realistic situation when the base exhibits coherence.
