Temperate and Cold Climate Continental Dunes

Climbing and falling sand dunes in Finnish Lapland

Matti Seppälä

Department of Geography, University of Helsinki, Hallituskatu 11, SF-00100 Helsinki, Finland

This paper presents the first description of climbing and falling sand dunes from Finnish Lapland. They are located on the slopes of a glaciated valley containing an esker. The largest climbing dune is 1800 m long and 2–5 m high. The slope of the fell dips 7 degrees on average. The material comprising the dune is typical aeolian sand with a median grain size about 0.23 mm but not very well sorted. The dunes were formed just after deglaciation under periglacial conditions.
