High resolution biostratigraphy

John C. W. Cope

Department of Geology, University of Wales, PO Box 914, Cardiff CF1 3YE, UK

The degree of stratigraphical resolution obtainable from biostratigraphical data provides, for most parts of the Phanerozoic, a finer discrimination than that obtained by other means. The full potential of biostratigraphy has not yet been realised in many parts of the geological column and much time and effort, in many cases including primary taxonomic work, is needed, in a field which is currently considered unfashionable. Examples are selected from the Phanerozoic to illustrate the degree of resolution currently achievable.
