Waste disposal, data collection and quarry design

Ruth Allington & Geoffrey Walton

Geoffrey Walton Practice, Charlbury, Oxford OX7 3PH, UK

This paper outlines important data that must be collected as a basis for successful quarry design. In particular, it focuses on waste materials; how and in what quantities they will arise and why planning for their handling, storage and disposal must be an integral part of the design at all stages. Difficulties that arise when waste is underestimated or ignored are noted and design methods to avoid these pitfalls are described.
