Basin histories and major structures for Mesozoic and Cenozoic strata in northeast Ireland have been constrained with the help of computer-contoured isopach maps. Hand-drawn maps are included for comparison. The Highland Border Ridge, a well defined structural element since at least Lower Carboniferous times, separates the Rathlin Trough from the Lough Neagh-Larne Basin. The development of these basins was controlled by the pre-existing structures of the area, fault reactivation during late Hercynian movements and also Pangean rifting. A long-lived structural high in the Lough Neagh-Larne Basin, the Knockagh axis, is inferred to be a major block detached from the adjacent Longford-Down Massif.
