Conodont colour maturation indices for the Carboniferous of west-central Scotland

Mark T. Dean

British Geological Survey, Keyworth, Nottinghamshire, NG12 5GG, UK

The colour alteration of conodont elements from Carboniferous samples from west-central Scotland is summarized, and most values fall within indices 1 to 1.5. This range corresponds to geothermal temperatures of <50°C to 90°C which lie within the immature (early dry gas) to mature (perhaps mid-oil window) stages of hydrocarbon generation. Where the index values are 1.5, and other necessary geological criteria are satisfied, support is offered here for oil generation through burial maturation.
