The past two decades have seen a revolution in our knowledge of the detailed structure, tectonic and volcanic patterns of mid-ocean ridge spreading centres and transform faults, brought about mainly by the use of a variety of high-resolution sonars. This paper reviews those studies, and attempts to provide an up-to-date description of those aspects of mid-ocean ridge structure that are most relevant for comparison with ophiolites.
