Chesowanja: a revised geological interpretation
William Bishop,
Andrew Hill &
Martin Pickford
Chesowanja is located in the north Kenya Rift Valley, to the East of Lake Baringo, between Tangulbei and Mukutan (36°12E, 0°39N). An important succession of Quaternary sediments occurs in this vicinity. Some of the sedimentary units contain abundant fossils and intermittent evidence of hominid activity over a period of perhaps 2 my. Remains of Australopithecus sp. have also been found. Artifacts appear to belong to the Oldowan/Developed Oldowan Cultural Complex, the Acheulian tradition, and to later stone industries. This paper outlines the geological setting of the faunal and artifact assemblages.
