Preliminary observations on the palaeomagnetic stratigraphy of the area west of Lake Baringo, Kenya

Peter Dagley, Alan E. Mussett & H. C. Palmer

Over 600 palaeomagnetic samples have been collected from igneous and sedimentary units of the succession exposed west of Lake Baringo in the Tugen Hills and surrounding area. The magnetic polarity has been measured for all but a few of the samples which span the period 16 m.y.-o m.y. and some preliminary potassium-argon ages have been determined. The palaeomagnetic and petrological identifications have been used, with previous detailed geological mapping, to build up a preliminary palaeomagnetic stratigraphy. When the dates have been refined and some outstanding problems of magnetisation solved it may be possible to identify individual transitions in the period 0 to 5 my. For the older parts of the succession the transitions will aid stratigraphic and palaeontological correlation.
