Part III. Regional Studies in the Gregory Rift Valley |
Chronostratigraphy of the Baringo Basin, Kenya

The results of a potassium-argon radiometric dating programme, based on field-work over 14 000 km 2 of the northern Kenya Rift Valley, are described. The Cenozoic volcanic rocks of the area, chiefly phonolites, trachytes and basalts, and their pyroclastic equivalents, cover a time-span from about 20 m.y. to immediately prehistoric times, and the age determinations on the volcanics have greatly assisted temporal correlation of the volcanic and tectonic events in the stratigraphic record. In any one section the validity of the dates obtained can be checked against the rigorous constraints imposed by the geological mapping. Despite the limited definition of the K-Ar method in this time range it has been possible to draw tentative conclusions regarding the rates of geological processes in the Rift and it is suggested that the sedimentary units and non-sequences record the greater part of the time-span. In the context of the present volume, the K-Ar programme has made possible the calibration of a remarkable series of fossiliferous sedimentary units which have yielded rich assemblages of fossil vertebrates.
