This 1:10 000 coloured geological map of the area around the Olorgesailie archaeological reserve, as well as a geological map of the area between Olorgesailie and Ngong on a scale of 1:50 000, was prepared in 1946 for a conference in Nairobi organised by Dr L. S. B. Leakey. Funds were not then available to publish these maps.
A reduced and simplified version of a 1:600 geological map of the Olorgesailie archaeological reserve, prepared in 1944 was published by the Geological Survey of Kenya (Bull. 42, Geology of the Magadi Area, B. H. Baker, 1958). The three maps were based on theodolite triangulation and made on a plane table using a rangefinder for the 1:10 000 and 1:50 000 maps and tacheometer for the 1:600 map.
On this published version of the 1:10 000 map, the names of the units have been changed to those used by Baker (1958 and 1976; also see Isaac, this volume paper 13 for further details of the mapped lithological units of the Olorgesailie Formation and a full list of references). The map was kindly redrawn, for colour reproduction, by Mrs Barbara Isaac. Grants towards the cost of publication, from the Royal Society, London and the L. S. B. Leakey Foundation, are gratefully acknowledged.
