Modern Shelf Anoxia

Hypoxic conditions in the northern Adriatic Sea: historical development and ecological significance

Dubravko Justic

Department of Zoology, University of Zagreb, Rooseveltov trg 6, 41000 Zagreb, Yugoslavia

In the northern Adriatic Sea the occurrence of anoxic events and related benthic mortalities has considerably increased in frequency during the past 15 years. This paper summarizes recent findings and presents new evidence on the causes and consequences of this phenomenon. Trends in the oxygen content 1911–1984, trends in the Secchi disk depth 1911–1982 and long-term changes in the communities of benthos and meroplankton are described. The relative importance of a set of factors which create favourable conditions for the development of hypoxia is discussed.
