Holocene serial folding in the Zagros

C. D. Mann & C. Vita-Finzi

University College London, Gower St, London WC1E 6BT, UK

In the south-east Zagros Mountains of Iran, deformation during the Quaternary has occurred by serial folding, with the mountain front advancing westwards at 17 mm/yr. Coastal uplift during the Holocene indicates a horizontal slip of about 30 mm/yr. The geometry of the locked and nascent folds indicates compression by a horizontal force equivalent to between 0.134 and 0.790 kbar according to which model is adopted.
