The following types of change are considered: changes in the arrangement of orogenic belts since late Pre-Cambrian times, in particular their reduction in number: rates of vertical and horizontal displacement are given and bring out the contrast between vertical displacement whose rate falls off with time, and horizontal movement which may continue for many hundreds of million years at a few centimetres per annum. The paper ends with a discussion of the migration of plutonically active regions.
