Sedimentary environments of the lowest Zechstein sediments in the Lubin region, SW Poland

J. B. Tomaszewski

Instytut Gornictwa, Politechnika Wroclawskiej, Swierczewskiego 74, 50-020 Wroclaw, Poland

The lowest Zechstein sediments in the Lubin area form the ‘copper-bearing series’ and contain the copper ore deposit of the Foresudetic Monocline. Observations, measurements and sampling of the lowest Zechstein sediments were taken over an area of c. 25 km2 in the underground galleries of the Lubin copper mine. Chemical and mineralogical analysis of the samples was then carried out. Additional data on the ore body and the thickness of particular lithologies were supplied by the mine’s geological service. These data enabled the construction of isopach maps for the copper bearing series, plus reconstruction of the sedimentary environments.
