Biostratigraphic integration of Ordovician graptolite and conodont zones—a regional review

Stig M. Bergström

Department of Geology and Mineralogy, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio 43210, U.S.A.

Graptolite and conodont zonal successions, each currently including about fifteen zones, serve as the principal bases for regional correlations within the Ordovician System. Zonal graptolites and conodonts are not commonly found together but recent work in Baltoscandia, North America, and other areas has made it possible to establish more than eighty levels of ties between graptolite and conodont zonal units. Most of these are in strata of Arenig, Llanvirn, and Llandeilo age; relatively fewer ties have been found in other parts of the system. A regional evaluation of graptolite/conodont zone relations has produced useful new information not only about correlation between standard graptolite and conodont zones, but also, indirectly, about relations between units in the graptolite-zone successions of the European and Pacific Provinces.
