The monotypic ‘population’ accompanying the lectotype of Saetograptus varians (Wood 1900)

D. C. Palmer

Department of Geology, Trinity College, Dublin 2, Erie

The lectotype of Saetograptus varians (Wood) is accompanied by a monotypic assemblage of graptolites, which is shown to have current orientation and bimodal size distribution. The morphology of the two size classes is compared with that of the lectotype and the development of the nema analysed. This paper is the initial stage in a study of the semispinose Ludlow graptolite S. varians and is based on an examination of the lectotype and its accompanying fauna.
