Phylum UNCERTAIN

Order CONODONTOPHORIDA Eichenberg 1930

A utilitarian classification is used here, based on Hass (Treatise, Part W, 1962) with amendments based on Lindström (1964) and Rhodes & Müller (1966). Some new and a few other genera are here included in Hass’ classification for the first time. The use of this classification does not imply that the present author believes that it has any phylogenetic value. It is used here only because it represents the best available taxonomic framework for treating the conodonts in the present volume. Studies of conodont assemblages (e.g. Rhodes 1952 and Walliser 1964) suggest that it has little phylogenetic significance, and the increasing recognition of "natural" conodont taxa will inevitably involve radical taxonomic revision.

Family DISTACODONTIDAE Bassler 1925

First, Camb M. Camb: Furnishina furnishi Müller and Oneotodus tenuis Müller, Ptychagnostus gibbus Z., Vestergötland, Sweden (Müller 1959; see also Cygan and Koucky 1963). Other Camb distacodids are probably relatively younger than these (Müller 1959, Tab. 3). There is some doubt as to whether such Camb genera as Westergaardodina are true conodonts.

Last, Dev Famenn: Acodina delata Stauffer, and A. zionensis Stauffer, "to II", Morvan, France (Lys, Serre, Mauvier and Grekoff 1961; see also Sannemann 1955; Stauffer 1938, 1940).

Family BELODONTIDAE Huddle 1934

First, Camb M. Camb: Coelocerodontus? bisulcata (Müller). Ptychagnostus gibbus Z., Vestergötland, Sweden (Müller 1959). Hertzina, the new genus to which Müller referred this species, is here regarded as a junior subjective synonym of Coelocerodontus.

Last, Dev Famenn: Belodella triangularis (Stauffer) "to IIB", Morvan, France (Lys, Serre, Mauvier and Grekoff 1961).
