Introduction. The classification of the Chordata is that employed by Tarlo (1960). The reasons for including the Hemichordata and Pogonophora within the Chordata, rather than giving them the rank of independent phyla as in the Zoological Record, are discussed in detail in a more recent account (Tarlo 1967).
