Class PROTOMEDUSAE Caster 1945

Order BROOKSELLIDA Harrington & Moore 1956

First, Pre-Camb Varang: Brooksella canyonensis Bassler, Nankoweap group, Algonkian, Grand Canyon, Arizona (Bassler 1941, Van Gundy 1951). Allegedly older medusoid fossils from Grand Canyon described by Alf 1959 probably inorganic and/or algal in origin (see Glaessner 1962, pp. 479, 493).

Last, Ord Arenig: Brooksella silurica (von Huene), "oberen rothen Orthocerenkalk", Kärgarde, Dalarna, Sweden (von Huene 1904), and ?Brooksella cambria (? = Staurophyton bagnolensis Meunier 1891), "Grès Armoricains" (of uncertain L. Ord age), Bagnoles (Orne), France (Meunier 1891). Reference to Laotira sp. [now Brooksella] from Penn of Sinai, Egypt (Couyat & Fritel 1912) not substantiated by figs. or descriptions; Avnimelech (1966) suggests it is Duodecimedusina, describes D. aegyptiaca Avnimelech from Carb ?Namur, Um Bogma fm., Eastern Desert, Egypt, and places genus Duodecimedusina in Protomedusae.

Comment: Classification here follows Treatise F, but designations are subjective and uncertain. One family, Brooksellidae Walcott. Only other records: "Star cobbles", B. cambria and B. alternata, M. Camb, Conasauga sh, Olenoides—Marumia Z., Coosa Valley, Alabama (Walcott 1898); B. cambria, U. Camb, Grove Creek member, Boysen fm, Wind River Canyon, Wyoming (Caster 1942b).

Class SCYPHOZOA Götte 1887

General Comment: Taxa as in Treatise pt F, but classification of fossil medusae subjective and uncertain, as emphasized by Glaessner & Wade (1966).

Subclass SCYPHOMEDUSAE Lankester 1881

Extant only; comprises Tesseranthidae Haeckel, Eleutherocarpidae Clark, Cleistocarpidae Clark; No known fossil represntatives; Present distribution, cold seas.
