2. Neoththys: Levant and North African offshore

The Arabian sub-plate during the Mesozoic

F. Hirsch

Geological Survey of Israel, Malkhei Yisrael Street 30, 95501 Jerusalem, Israel

The Mesozoic facies, distribution, palaeo-zoo-geography and tectonic history of the Levantine and Tauride-Zagride autochthonous and para-autochthonous units, suggest that these areas were part of the Arabian sub-plate and never lay far apart. This would tend to invalidate the hypothesis of an oceanic basin (Mesogea) in the present Eastern Mediterranean during the Mesozoic.
