A detailed seismic and sedimentological study of a small area at the lower continental rise to abyssal plain transition off NW Africa has revealed a complex pattern of Plio-Quaternary sedimentation. The area is one of extremely low relief. However, the sediment facies distribution mirrors the slight morphological expression of basement structures and downslope shallow channels. Fine-grained hemipelagic sediments are dominant throughout, although in some cases the influence of low-density turbidity currents and of bottom currents is observed. Sandy turbidites, up to 2 metres thick in the channels, were emplaced during periods of lowered sea-level.
