Terrigenous Turbidites and Associated Facies

Sedimentation in the southern Cape Verde Basin: regional observations by long-range sidescan sonar

R. B. Kidd & R. C. Searle

Institute of Oceanographic Sciences, Wormley, Godalming, Surrey, GU8 5UB, UK

A long-range sidescan sonar survey of the lower continental rise in the Cape Verde Basin has detected a dominant acoustic facies characterized by lineated backscattering patterns. These are interpreted as the sedimentary expression of turbidity current pathways across the area. Primary sediment transport directions can be interpreted from the backscattering patterns. Towards the north and west sediment distribution is increasingly affected by abyssal hill topography, either exposed oceanic basement features or hills draped with pelagic sediment.
