Stratigraphic modelling involves a multi-dimensional parameter-fitting process where a large number of free model parameters are determined by hand in an iterative sequence of educated guesses. This problem can be viewed as an optimization task. It is solved here using a genetic algorithm. The iterative trying and checking process, which previously had to be done manually, is thereby automated. This method is demonstrated to be consistent for a completely defined toy model. Furthermore it is applied to a real problem involving the Eocene to Miocene succession of the Bavarian Molasse Basin.
