Part 4: Stratigraphical Review

The Tertiary period

Brian Michael Funnell, M.A., PH.D., F.G.S.

Department of Geology, Sedgwick Museum, Cambridge

A time-scale for the Tertiary period is suggested which is based on radiometric age-determinations published by March 1964. The principal boundaries are dated as follows:

Comparison with time-scales published previously (Holmes 1959; Evernden et al. 1961; Kulp 1961) shows a number of differences in detail, but none of any magnitude. The date attributed to the Mio-Pliocene boundary is, however, rather younger than those given previously.
